A Second Modest Proposal

In 1729, Jonathan Swift's famous essay A Modest Proposal Began  . . .
IT IS A MELANCHOLY OBJECT to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants, who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.

I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these children sound, useful members of the commonwealth would deserve so well of the public as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.

But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the children of professed beggars; it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a certain age who are born of parents in effect as little able to support them as those who demand our charity in
the streets.
In 2013, I humbly (but of course not as eloquently or poetically, but just as passionately and satirically) continue . . .
Rather, I would like to modestly propose that instead of letting this vast resource go to waste, we put it to great use! Instead of letting these unwanted, inconvenient babes to be born and become a great nuisance to our society, let's off with them and see what they can do for us.

I propose that from the aborted fetuses, we formulate ingredients to put into beauty cream and skin care products so that we no longer have to put up with the horrifying tragedies of wrinkles, blackheads and pimples!

I propose that from the aborted fetuses, we formulate medicine to put into our wanted, convenient, loved children so that they may not get sick!

I propose that we take these aborted fetuses and butcher them up, sell them, pack them and FedEx them to be used for medical testing. Our tax dollars could be given to an organization, let's just call it "Intended Procreation", so that they would support women and allow them to rid themselves of these babes. Then this imaginary organization that I just made up, "Intended Procreation", could profit even more from selling the now dead fetuses. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a selfless organization that would serve us in this way?

I propose, since I really, really enjoy soda pop and crackers, that we take the tissue from these dead, unwanted babies and experiment new flavors and new sweeteners on them. Then my Pepsi and Nabisco products will be even BETTER! Who knows? Dead babies may taste good!

I propose, that even when a late-term baby is actually born alive, we still use it for testing and experimentation. We won't waste the money or time on anesthesia for it, will cut it open and perform experiments for the greater good! It wasn't wanted anyway.

Well, actually, we heartbreakingly already have. Don't believe me? Click (and click and click and click and click . . . ) below.

  1. The vast majority of fetal cell lines were developed years ago and serve as a very important tool in science. It isn't as though the cell lines used to make the components are coming from freshly aborted fetuses. The fetal cell lines used for vaccines, for example, came from abortions that are older than me and pre-date Roe v. Wade by a decade. http://www.drwile.com/lnkpages/render.asp?vac_abortion

It isn't as though abortion is going to cease to exist if we no longer use these cell lines for scientific endeavors. There is no profit to women who have abortions to push them to have more to produce more cells. They can be and have been propagated in the laboratory for decades. The truth is that the cells are used to prepare proteins for all kinds of things as you mention but it isn't creating a demand for more abortions for more cells.

The early days of cell culture had scientists doing all sorts of things that are ethically dubious. I would recommend reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which chronicles the development of another adult cell line. There were certainly ethical lines that were crossed at the time when that happened just as there were ethical lines crossed in the development of fetal cell lines. I'm not sure that the outrage over this now makes very much difference. But I do understand that the prospect of purchasing items that used fetal cells is unnerving for many.

    1. Thanks Sarah. I know that the vaccination fetal cell lines are from two in particular abortions that occurred in the 1960's. I think it is harder to know the source of other fetal cell lines and the fetal tissues that are being experimented on. For me, it really doesn't matter if it happened in the 1960's or recently. I believe it's wrong and don't want to support it or have anything to do with it.

I also realize that abortion won't cease to exist if we stopped using these fetal cell lines. I also think a lot of this is a slippery slope and we need to be very, very careful where these types of decisions could lead us. I find it confusing, frustrating and upsetting that if this same type of experimentation was done on aborted animals, there would be a huge protest.

The Henrietta Lacks case is very interesting and sheds light on the types of consequences there are when these kinds of decisions are not thought through.

Perhaps outrage at this point won't make a difference. But that doesn't stop me from being outraged. To me, this is all wrong. And from the people who I have talked to about it, my understanding is that most people don't know about this. And as a society, we need to be informed and educated about medical ethics so that we can all make the right choice for ourselves. I know many who after learning about this are going to start expressing their views to their doctors and asking for the alternative vaccines when possible.

  2. Thank you for posting this. I was aware of some of this but not to this extent. It is really sad that this is happening.

    1. Thanks Erin. It is really sad to see what is happening and where legalizing abortion has led us. I am hoping that more people will become aware of the types of things that are happening because of it.
